Barometric pressure and pain

Barometric pressure is the weight of the air around us. It drops before storms and rises as weather clears. Many people with migraine, arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome say they can "feel the weather coming", often with headaches, joint pain or fatigue.

On a high day

  • Keep your plans flexible and your medication close.
  • Drink water, eat regularly and protect your sleep.
  • Plan rest before you need it. The spoon planner can help.

Frequently asked questions

Many people with migraine, arthritis, fibromyalgia and other chronic conditions report that changes in air pressure, temperature or humidity make symptoms worse. Research results are mixed and it varies a lot between people, which is why tracking your own symptoms alongside the weather is the best way to find out if it affects you.
Each day gets points for the biggest 24-hour change in air pressure (3, 6 and 10 hPa or more), a temperature swing of about 22°F (12°C) or more, and humidity above 85%. Low, moderate and high are based on those points. It describes the weather, not your body.
A change of about 5 to 10 hPa (0.15 to 0.30 inHg) within 24 hours is a noticeable shift, often ahead of a storm front. Changes above 10 hPa are large.
One email at 7am local time, only on days a change at or above your chosen level is coming in the next 36 hours, and never twice for the same change. We store your email, zip code and sensitivity, nothing about your health. Every email has a one-tap link to stop.
Zip code search is US-only for now. "Use my location" works anywhere, but email alerts need a US zip code.
No. It is weather information. If your symptoms change or worsen, talk to your clinician. To see whether weather is one of your triggers, try flare-up trigger tracking.
